Happy Friday! We just launched into the fun and firey Sagittarius season for the holidays. π We're 20 days into this round of Finding Flow, my 30-day writing challenge and the breakthroughs are SO GOOD. Many are enjoying writing again, and some are even enjoying writing for the first time. People have stopped tracking word count and instead are tracking how they feel. Best of all β the writing feels GOOD. If I run a program like this again, it will be at least 60 days. More to come on this. I'm also planning to retire some of my old writing programs in the coming weeks βΒ so if you want to collect some DIY writing resources and courses, you'll hear more about this soon, too. π« Today I want to share 12 enlightening truths about freelance writing.Β These will apply to you as a business owner too.
Potential clients and customers don't care unless you answer the question, "What's in it for me?" On your sales page, skip the life story (usually a few sentences will suffice), your favorite childhood food, and whether you drink your coffee black or doused in oat milk.
Painkillers are easier to sell than vitamins. Really dig into your client's problems and how the solution helps them.
Full price over discounts. Offer discounts too often and you train your customers to wait for a sale. Consider adding bonuses instead. A bonus 1:1 or group call or a free gift.
Prepare for a client to question your copywriting skills. During consult calls with potential clients, I always ask if they've worked with a copywriter before. If they have, I ask lots of questions about what worked and what didn't. If they haven't worked with a copywriter before, this is your opportunity to educate them on the magic that's within the realm of copywriting, and what's not. Proactively communicate WHY you made certain decisions in the copy before they even ask. This shows them that you're the expert.
Only crappy copywriters say the industry is noisy. The best ones have referrals lined up and know that they're so much more than a copywriter.Β Authentic voices are and will continue to SHINE in a world of AI-generated content. (Yes. We can tell.)
Prioritize testimonials. They provide the great copy for you. Use testimonials as copy inspiration and feature testimonials throughout your copy.
The best way to strengthen your copywriting skills is to ... write copy. Even if you start by writing for free, it's great practice and you can use the feedback you get as testimonials. Study copy that stands out to you, and you'll likely be writing copy as you move throughout your day.
A client might not like your writing at first. It's okay. Your reaction is what you control. Get curious and uncover why they don't like the copy. There's a good chance that it's not your fault but something they didn't communicate or even realize until they saw your copy.
Be open to sharing iterations. Instead of spending a week tweaking the copy for a sales page, show your client an early draft and talk them through the copy while sharing the rationale for your decisions. It's easier to modify as you go than scrap the whole thing and start over. As you get to know a new client, you'll need to do this much less.
Writer's block isn't a thing for authors and it's not for copywriters either. Living life outside your laptop will give you plenty to write about.Β
Writing about things you enjoy will bring you clients and keep your creativity sharp. Do you really want to write a dozen blogs that you think you need to write for SEO? No. Write the thing that excites you.
Consistency beats intensity in the long run. Focus on building long-term sustainable habits over using willpower to bust through for a short time (this leads to burnout).
If you liked this list, you'll love Intuitive Copywriting School. I'm refining the curriculum in the coming days and will announce the inaugural launch right here in your inbox. This will be the only time the material is taught live. With any course I teach live for the first time, students get 11 billion x the value (approximation). Enjoy your weekend! ππ Jacqueline P.S. This is the best thing on the internet this week. I've watched it and laughed out loud at least 10 times and sent it to all my astrology-loving friends. Ready for it??? |
