Hey, friend —
At first glance, those two topics in the subject line have zilch to do with each other.
First, let's talk about leaky things.
My clients bring me their writing energy leaks.
Writing energy leaks are those things that you've meant to write for the longest time and are putting them off. Sometimes for no good reason. You put them on your list to do first thing on Monday. And at the end of the day on Monday, it doesn't happen. So you cross it off and put it on the list to do for Tuesday. What happens on Tuesday?
You guessed it — it doesn't happen Monday or Tuesday — week after week. So you put it on the list for Friday. And then it still doesn't happen on Friday. So you resolve to get it done "someday," which slips into months, maybe years.
This is an energy leak.
Guess what wakes you up at 3 am Saturday morning? The energy leak.
That leak takes up small amounts of energy all day. And every time you think about it, you’re spending energy in a direction that gets you nowhere.
It's the drippy faucet that fills a bowl by the end of the day.
When people arrive at community writing sessions, they sit down, declare their writing goal for the session, and for two focused hours, they write.
Sure they could bugger off and scroll Instagram, but something magical happens when you block two hours, gather with a group of people with writing to get done, and say you’re going to write something — you write.
Even if you didn’t want to, once there’s nothing else to do, you may as well write.
By the end of the session — and usually, much sooner, they cross off their most significant energy leak.
I can hear the shift in their voices and energy as they speak. A heavy-feeling task has been nagging at them for the longest time, and when they finally do it, their energy softens, and suddenly, they can breathe again. Usually it turns out that writing task wasn't so bad after all.
This is the result of plugging your energy leaks.
It's that writing thing that's on your list that you know you need to do.
Maybe it's even something that you know will push your business forward. Sometimes, it's a pitch, a simple email, a guest blog post, a sales page, or a book. Or maybe a creative project like a poem.
What does that piece of writing cost you by not finishing it?
Plugging Energy Leaks on Instagram
Now, what if that energy leak is consistent Instagram posts to share your message? (It can be any other platform. Note that Instagram might not be the best platform for your business).
You get inspired to post and get one out. Then a week goes by and you've ghosted. Not sure what to post. But you sure are thinking about posting.
How would you feel about posting a dozen posts to your Instagram feed once and never posting again?
Sigh of relief?
Or does it feel constrictive?
If it feels like an exhale, you'll appreciate this case study from a client.
It's all about a set-it-and-forget-it Instagram 12-grid copywriting strategy.
Of all the conversations that come up with my writing community, this one comes up at least once a week — social media.
Many business owners have what they call a love-hate relationship with social.
They love it for the connection it brings but hate…

It creates energy leaks.
If you LOVE creating on social, this case study isn't for you.
I had a lot of fun helping this client plug a big energy leak (that also will save her $12-24K a year). Take a look a the case study on the blog: Creating a Static 12-Grid Customer Attracting Machine on Instagram.
Your challenge this weekend: plug ONE simple energy leak. Put a cork in it.
It could be something as simple as sending a follow-up email, a pitch, or an invitation.
Clearing up those writing energy leaks is as simple as putting one hour on the calendar a week, committing, sitting down, and writing.

Before I started the community, I was a writer who wasn't writing and had energy leaking all over the place — and I felt shitty about it. I want to cheer you on as you write and plug those leaks. You're so much more powerful without them.
Enjoy your writing this weekend!
